On September 1, 2012 at approximately 10:09 PM, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office received numerous 911 calls in reference to possible shots fired in the area of 412 North 2000 West in West Point.
Within (1) minute, law enforcement units from the Davis County Sheriff’s Office and Clinton Police Department arrived at a residence, deputies found a vehicle that appeared to have been involved in a motor vehicle crash in front of the residence, the first arriving deputy also noted a male stumbling near the sidewalk at the same location.
Deputies and officers quickly detained (3) individuals in the vehicle, it was later determined that these individuals were driving on 2000 West and a vehicle from the above residence backed out of the driveway and struck the individuals vehicle, the suspect vehicle that struck them fled from the scene of the crash.
During the initial investigation, it appears as though the suspect involved in the shooting ran east out the residence hopping fences, at some point, the weapon was discarded in the backyard of a residence, it was later determined that the vehicle and driver who fled the scene was a friend of the suspect, he apparently became nervous and fled. He was later detained by deputies.
After the quick detaining of the (3) individuals in the vehicle, the Davis County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who are also paramedics, immediately started rendering aid to the individual who was stumbling near the sidewalk. This individual was found to have a gunshot wound to his upper chest and a large amount of blunt trauma on his face, early indications were the victim also had possibly 2 grazing wounds to his face.
Within approximately 5 to 10 minutes, several law enforcement officers from numerous agencies which includes; Clinton Police Department, Syracuse Police Department, Clearfield Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, Kaysville and Centerville arrived in the area and established a perimeter.
While the victim, a male in his early 30’s was being cared for by deputy/paramedics, several officers secured the residence where the shooting occurred and numerous people were detained and transported from the scene to the Sheriff’s Office West Point Substation for questioning.
During the investigation, a handgun, which later was verified as stolen out of the Ogden area was located in the backyard of a residence. The vehicle involved in the hit and run earlier was located in the area and a male subject was taken into custody by deputies/officers, again, this individual has been identified as a friend of the suspect.
The victim was taken to a local trauma center where he was taken into surgery and remains in a medication induced coma, he has been listed as ‘serious but stable’.
Numerous individuals in the residence were transported to the Davis County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.
There has been a large amount of evidence gathered and is being processed by the Davis County C.I.S. Unit
Early indications are that the victim was a member of a possible gang out of Ogden, although this has not been confirmed by detectives.
There is no motive for the shooting at this time, charges will be screened and filed with the Davis County Attorney’s Office.
