A couple was traveling through Fruit Heights tonight and had stopped for some reason partially in the roadway on Mountain Road.  They were hit by a vehicle from behind as they were to the rear of their pickup.  The male victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital and died while en route.   The female victim has extensive injuries, including head and lower extremities.

The accident is being investigated by accident reconstructionists from Layton PD, but on the surface, it appears that the victims were traveling Southbound on Mountain Road when they stopped.  They were not off the side of the roadway completely and had stepped out of their pickup to possibly readjust some items in the back.  They were both outside the truck to the rear, when a vehicle also traveling southbound hit them from behind.

The male driver of the second vehicle called 911 and was very distraught.  He provided basic life support with the assistance of dispatchers until paramedics arrived.  The male died while en route to the hospital.  The female sustained serious injuries to the head and lower extremities.

Possible contributing factors are the weather, with the snow, poor visibility and the vehicle partially in the lane of travel.  The accident is under investigation and any potential charges will be screened through the County Attorney’s Office.
